Financial modelling is the umbrella term used for a set of practical skills, techniques, methodologies and disciplines used to create a graphic analytical tool. This tool is used to aid understanding and decision making in areas such as financial planning, investment analysis, valuation and strategy.

  • Excel basics and the basics of design: ten essential Excel shortcuts; design principles; key elements of model structure; group edit tools.

  • Building the framework: setting up the model structure; input versus formulae conventions; absolute versus relative references;

  • Building the schedules: using naming conventions; using 'corkscrews' and 'BASE' calculations; using 'if' to create flexibility; operations schedule; fixed-asset schedule.

  • Building the debt schedule: a simple approach to debt; using 'if' to solve more complex problems; using the function wizard.

  • Balancing - straight away: integrating the financials and balancing the balance sheet as we go - a stepwise approach; building in a balance check; a structured approach to model development.

  • Cash flows: linking cash from operations; linking fixed assets and financing; implementing some simple checking calculations.

  • Tax and valuation: modelling UK corporate tax in more detail; tax loss schedules; valuation and related functions; building the valuation module.

  • Analysis and presentation: dynamic labelling/text strings; number formatting; Excel's handy analytical tools - data tables; goal seek; print management.
